Ok, so around 7 or so months ago I noticed my upper right wisdom
tooth coming through. It got infected a little at the time, which I
think is normally a sign that it might be impacted- but I decided to
leave it for a bit just to see if it came through ok, since the
infection went away quite quickly. It did, but then around 4 months
afterwards I noticed a lot of the TMJ symptoms I can find on the
internet, all at once. This meant jaw clicking, face/neck pain,
headaches, stuffy ears, tired jaw, jaw misalignment, radical bite
change, clenching at night etc. It feels like my bottom jaw has moved
slightly forward so that when I completely relax, the only meeting teeth
are the front two and about 3 teeth on the bottom jaw. Like the
beginning of an overbite. In order to clench properly, I have to
intentionally move my bottom jaw back into place and clench down to hold
it there, otherwise it just naturally moves forward. Naturally I was
inclined to put the two together and see the wisdom tooth as the cause
of TMJ, since there was nothing else I could point to to explain it. I
then saw a dentist who said that I should get them taken out (both upper
wisdom teeth for some reason) but after reading lots of stories online,
it seems that wisdom teeth extractions can actually CAUSE TMJ in some
cases, and can certainly make them worse in a lot of cases. So my main
question is basically this: can impacted wisdom teeth cause jaw
misalignment/TMJ, and would getting them taken out help at all? It is
really frustrating at this point and is showing no signs of going away.
What have I really got to lose if it is already causing me daily
headaches (most of the time all day) and pain near enough all day?
